The recent increase in Electricity Tariff Increase in Nigeria has sparked a lot of reactions in the country, Nigerians feel defrauded as they have to pay their light bills through the nose without enjoying the actual value of what they pay for.

Mr Musliu Oseni, the Vice Chairman of the Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has announced an Increase in Electricity Tariff for Band A customers. He announced this at a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday. Oseni said starting from April 3, Customers in the Band A classification who receive 20 hours of electricity supply daily, will pay N225 per kilowatt (kW). This is a significant rise as it is just about three times the previous rate of N66.

Band A Customers are those who receive 20-24 hours of electricity supply daily, and Band B enjoys 16-24 hours of power supply. Band C receives 12-16 hours of power supply daily Band D receives 8-12 hours of electricity supply daily and Band E only receives 4-8 hours of electricity supply daily

According to the Punch, the NERC has directed all Electricity Distribution Companies to provide as much clarity as possible to all customers that may be affected. On the new electricity tariff, NERC said: “All customers wrongly billed at the new rate should be refunded through energy tokens no later than Thursday the 11th of April 2024. And they should file evidence of compliance with the Commission by the 12th of April 2024.

Meanwhile, The Minority Caucus of the House of Representatives has condemned the increase in electricity tariffs by the NERC describing the move as insensitive, inhuman, and evil. The Speaker of the caucus, Kingsley Chinda further stressed in Abuja on Friday that the increase places an unbearable burden on the already strained populace and should not be tolerated.

According to Mr Kingsley, ”The timing of this Increase in tariff, amidst prevailing economic challenges is insensitive and detrimental to the well-being of Nigerians”.It further highlights the disconnect between policymakers and the realities faced by the masses of our people.

Mr President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been called on to prevail on the electricity regulator, NERC, to rescind this decision and make the people’s welfare of great priority. He furthermore called for increased accountability and transparency in managing the resources within the electricity sector, adding that citizens have the right to demand efficient delivery of service and fair pricing mechanisms that align with economic realities.
