The Senate has addressed recent statements by Senator Abdurrahman Kawu Sumaila, who claimed during an interview with BBC Hausa Service that he receives N21 million monthly in salary and allowances. In his comments, Sumaila also mentioned that each senator is allocated N21 million per month as a running cost, following a recent increase.

Responding to these claims, Senate spokesman Senator Yemi Adaramodu (Ekiti South) clarified that the N21 million sum is strictly for running costs and is separate from the salaries and personal allowances determined by the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation, and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC). According to RMAFC Chairman Mohammed Bello, a senator’s monthly salary and allowances amount to N1,063,860.

Adaramodu, who also chairs the Senate Committee on Public Affairs, emphasized that running costs are not unique to the legislature but are necessary for the operational expenses of all government bodies. He pointed out that these funds are intended exclusively for official use and must be supported by proof of legitimate expenditure.

“This is not a personal allowance or salary for the legislator,” Adaramodu explained. “These funds also help to support the staff of constituency offices.”

The Senate spokesperson expressed displeasure over the public’s perception of excessive spending in Parliament, underscoring that the Nigerian Senate is made up of highly qualified professionals committed to enhancing the country’s political and socio-economic environment.
