Veteran Nigerian journalist, Jimi Disu, has expressed deep concern over the country’s worsening economic conditions, highlighting the soaring cost of living, particularly the sharp rise in electricity costs. Speaking on Nigeria Info FM, Disu lamented the severe financial hardship Nigerians are facing, noting that the situation has deteriorated significantly compared to past times.
“Nigeria has never been this bad. Just this morning, I spoke to an ordinary person who told me her household has resorted to one meal daily. Even during the war, it wasn’t this bad in this part of town,” he said.
He further illustrated the financial strain many are experiencing by sharing his challenges with electricity bills. “I’m going to be spending about N120,000 on electricity for an apartment, and I live alone. Not only do I live alone, I also have two homes: a day home and a weekend home. It’s the weekend home I’m talking about,” Disu explained.
He noted that within his estate, the minimum electricity cost per household is N50,000. The escalating prices, according to him, have placed enormous financial pressure on many Nigerians. “If you’re not careful, you’ll sell a house only to use the money to clear some debts and have just a little left to buy something for the house,” he added.
Disu also highlighted the diminishing value of the Naira, which has made saving increasingly difficult for many citizens. “The dilemma now is that you can’t save because the Naira has no value,” he concluded.
His comments reflect the growing frustration and anxiety over the country’s economic challenges as many Nigerians grapple with the rising cost of goods and services.
