The newly confirmed Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, has declared her administration will maintain zero tolerance for corruption, pledging swift and transparent reforms in the judiciary. Speaking on Wednesday after her confirmation by the Senate, Justice Kekere-Ekun emphasized that corruption would not be tolerated under her leadership, while also ensuring judicial independence and technological advancements to improve the legal system.
“All pre-election matters will terminate at the Court of Appeal. I have zero tolerance for corruption,” Justice Kekere-Ekun stated, underscoring her commitment to tackling one of the most pressing issues facing Nigeria’s judiciary. Her confirmation follows a letter from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which was read before the Senate, approving her as the substantive CJN.
The session, which took about two hours, saw senators engage her on a range of topics, particularly judicial reforms. Justice Kekere-Ekun reaffirmed her intention to leverage technology for the quick dispensation of justice, a key part of her reform agenda. She also highlighted the importance of maintaining judicial independence, ensuring that external influences do not compromise the integrity of Nigeria’s legal system.
Justice Kekere-Ekun had been serving as acting CJN since August, following the retirement of her predecessor, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola. Her confirmation marks a historic milestone as she becomes the 23rd substantive CJN and the second female to hold this prestigious position in the history of Nigeria.
As she takes on the mantle of leadership, there is optimism that her strong stance on corruption and judicial reforms will help restore public confidence in the nation’s legal system.
