Members of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Other Associated Institutions (NASU) have announced plans to resume their suspended strike due to the ongoing issue of four unpaid salaries from the Federal Government.

During the union’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held in Abuja, Prince Peters Adeyemi, the General Secretary of NASU, expressed the growing frustration among members regarding the situation. While he did not specify an exact start date for the impending strike, he indicated that the NEC would finalize their decision during the meeting.

“Our members’ patience has worn thin,” Adeyemi stated emphatically. “We are going to resume the suspended strike.”

This announcement comes on the heels of a directive issued by President Tinubu in October 2023, which stated that NASU and Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU) members should be paid two out of the four months’ withheld salaries by the federal government. These salaries had been withheld under the previous administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, following a prolonged strike over unresolved disputes that had significantly disrupted academic activities.

As the situation unfolds, university workers are rallying together to advocate for their rights and demand timely payment for their services, raising concerns about the impact of the withheld salaries on their livelihoods and the educational system as a whole.
