A tragic accident at Mosalasi Roundabout along New Ipaja Road in Lagos has claimed the life of a female pedestrian after a black Toyota Tundra veered off the roadway and ploughed into the sidewalk on Saturday, June 7.
The vehicle, with registration number FST 222 HV, was reportedly traveling at high speed when it lost control, mounted the pedestrian walkway, and struck the woman, killing her on the spot. The force of the impact propelled the truck further into a nearby livestock business, destroying part of its perimeter fence and a large billboard mounted on the property.
Eyewitnesses recounted scenes of horror and confusion following the crash. According to several bystanders, the driver attempted to escape the scene but was immediately intercepted by operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).
The driver was subsequently handed over to officers from the Gowon Estate Police Division, who have since detained him for questioning.
Authorities also confirmed that the victim’s remains were recovered and handed over to the police, pending further action.
In a statement, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, the General Manager of LASTMA, expressed profound sadness over the incident and issued condolences to the bereaved family.
“This is a deeply sorrowful occurrence that underscores the grave consequences of reckless driving,”Bakare-Oki said. “We mourn with the family of the deceased and pray the Almighty grants them strength during this difficult time.”
The incident has sparked fresh concerns over reckless driving on Lagos roads, with residents calling on authorities to intensify enforcement of traffic regulations to prevent future tragedies.
