The Enugu State government has mandated all churches and mosques remove outdoor loudspeakers and implement soundproofing measures within their worship centers within 90 days. This directive is part of the Enugu State Anti-Noise Pollution Policy, announced during a stakeholders’ meeting organized by the Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority (ECTDA).

The policy aims to address the growing issue of noise pollution in the state capital, which has been a significant concern. At the meeting, Hon. Uche Anya, Chairman of the ECTDA, highlighted the receipt of over 1,000 complaints from residents about disruptive noise from churches and other businesses. He emphasized that noise pollution is the largest challenge facing the capital city and that immediate action is necessary.

As part of its urban renewal efforts, the state government had previously directed nightclubs, beer parlors, and entertainment venues to reduce noise in residential areas. Hon. Anya urged churches and mosques to collaborate with the government to ensure the successful implementation of the policy, stressing that soundproofing is essential to prevent disturbances to neighbors.

The ECTDA’s initiative aims to enhance urban living conditions and mitigate the impact of noise pollution in Enugu State.
