Nigerian sprinter Favour Ofili has qualified for the final of the women’s 200m event at the ongoing Paris Olympic Games. Ofili finished second in her semi-final race with a season’s best time of 22.05 seconds on Monday, August 5. She trailed behind Julien Alfred, who won the first semi-final with a time of 21.98 seconds.

Ofili, a Commonwealth Games silver medalist, had earlier missed competing in the 100m event due to administrative oversights by the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) and the Nigerian Olympic Committee, who failed to submit her name for the event.

The 21-year-old’s achievement in the 200m marks a historic moment for Nigerian athletics, as she becomes the first Nigerian sprinter to reach the 200m final at the Olympics since Mary Onyali accomplished the feat in Atlanta in 1996, over six years before Ofili was born.
