Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), disclosed that security agencies have identified a senator as one of the backers of the protest against the administration led by Bola Tinubu.

Following an emergency meeting of the FCT Security Council in Abuja, Wike revealed that the senator had allegedly called security personnel to accompany a truck carrying food for the protesters.

Wike emphasized the importance of respecting democracy while noting that protests are permissible under its framework. However, he reminded protesters of a court order limiting their activities to the MKO Abiola National Stadium in Abuja.

“Today, we witnessed attempts to enter Eagle Square. Although miscreants were unsuccessful, intelligence indicates plans to vandalize property and endanger lives tomorrow. Security agencies will prevent this. I urge all protesters to adhere to the court’s directive and gather at MKO Abiola Stadium,” Wike stated.

Regarding the senator’s alleged involvement in sponsoring the protest, Wike affirmed, “It is clear that a senator has facilitated security agencies to provide food for protesters. This constitutes sponsorship. Security agencies will summon the senator to ascertain their role in supporting such actions against the government.”

The situation underscores ongoing tensions surrounding protests and democratic processes in Nigeria.
