The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to addressing the economic challenges faced by Nigerians through strategic investments in agriculture. Speaking at a town hall meeting in Kaduna on Thursday, September 19, Idris highlighted the government’s efforts to alleviate the high cost of living, particularly the rising cost of food.
In his remarks, the minister noted that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has allocated N362.94 billion to the agricultural sector. The funds will be used to ensure the distribution of sufficient fertilizers to farmers across the country’s 36 states and to establish adequate irrigation systems that support year-round food production.
“Mr. President is fully aware of the current hardship experienced by Nigerians, particularly the skyrocketing food prices,” Idris stated. “This is why we have allocated N362.94 billion to the agricultural sector, to ensure that farmers receive sufficient fertilizers and to boost crop yields. Additionally, irrigation systems are being implemented to enable continuous food production throughout the year.”
The minister also stressed that the government is working on resolving conflicts between farmers and herdsmen, which have historically hindered agricultural productivity. This is part of a larger effort to create a stable and sustainable food supply system.
Idris further explained that these agricultural interventions are part of President Tinubu’s broader economic plan, the *Renewed Hope 11-Point Agenda*, which includes initiatives to improve various sectors of the economy. The government aims to create business opportunities for students, youths, traders, artisans, and the manufacturing sector, thereby boosting overall economic growth and improving the quality of life for Nigerians.
This, according to Idris, is one of the key approaches the government is using to combat the country’s current economic woes and create a pathway to long-term prosperity.
