The Federal Ministry of Education has announced the introduction of vocational skills such as plumbing, hairstyling, tiling, solar installation, and more into the basic education curriculum across Nigerian schools, starting in January 2025. Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, announced during a stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja on Monday, revealing that students in basic schools will now be required to acquire at least two vocational skills as part of their education.

“The idea is that by the time children finish school, they should have at least two skills,” Mamman explained. “This will ensure that students can lead productive lives after school by being equipped with practical, employable skills.”

The new curriculum is based on the National Skills Framework, which has already received approval. It will be implemented across both public and private schools nationwide, making it a comprehensive change in Nigeria’s educational system.

Prof. Mamman emphasized that the new curriculum is mandatory for all schools in the country, as it aims to enhance students’ prospects by providing them with hands-on skills to complement their academic learning.
