Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has strongly opposed a social media campaign urging the removal of Igbo people from Lagos and the Southwest region of Nigeria.

Speaking through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, the governor condemned a post from the ‘LagosPedia’ handle on X (formerly Twitter), which threatened to initiate a protest under the banner ‘#IgboMustGo’ from August 20th to 30th, 2024.

The account, boasting around 42,000 followers, vanished from the microblogging site on Thursday.

Akosile emphasized that neither Governor Sanwo-Olu nor the Lagos State Government supports what he described as “irresponsible, divisive, and dangerous rhetoric” spread by the account.

He stated that Lagos is home to all Nigerian citizens, irrespective of their ethnic origins. “Governor Sanwo-Olu perceives the post as not only irresponsible and divisive but also an attempt to create discord between the Yoruba in the Southwest and other ethnic groups, particularly those who have made Lagos their permanent residence.

The Governor urges Lagosians not to let any person or group create tension in the State, calling on security agencies to swiftly investigate those behind the handle and hold them accountable. Mr. Governor encourages Lagosians to disregard the post and any similar messages, committing to redouble his efforts in ensuring lasting peace in the State,” Akosile said.
