The Labour Party (LP) faction led by Julius Abure has announced that its presidential ticket for the 2027 general election is no longer reserved for Peter Obi, opening the race to all qualified Nigerians. This decision was made following the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja on Monday, where the party reviewed its previous decision to reserve the presidential and governorship tickets for Peter Obi and Alex Otti, governor of Abia State, respectively.

The faction clarified that all party tickets, from the presidency to the House of Assemblies, are now contestable. The NEC also emphasized that Governor Otti does not have the authority to convene party meetings or appoint a caretaker committee. He rejected a recent stakeholders’ meeting he convened in Abia State that led to the appointment of a 29-member committee headed by Nenadi Usman.

Another faction leader, Callistus Okafor, has rejected the Usman-led committee, maintaining that a court order supports his claim as acting chairman of the party.
