Lagos State Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat has called out Eko Electricity Distribution Company (Eko DisCo) after receiving a shocking electricity bill of ₦29 million for April—up from ₦2.7 million in March.

Speaking at a meeting on Victoria Island with stakeholders from the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) and Lagos State Government, Hamzat expressed deep concern over the alarming billing practices of the power provider.

“Last month, in my house—or the state house that I live in—the bill was ₦2.7 million. This month, Eko DisCo sent us a bill of ₦29 million. It’s crazy,” he said.

Hamzat revealed he had already purchased a prepaid meter to avoid estimated billing, but the transition to proper metering has proven frustratingly slow.

Highlighting that the issue isn’t unique to him, he cited a case in Surulere, where a resident was handed a ₦2.8 million bill—more than his annual rent of ₦2 million.

The Deputy Governor’s remarks echo the growing frustration of many Lagosians, who face inflated bills despite erratic power supply. His comments have sparked a renewed call for more transparent, fair, and accountable metering systems across the state.
