The Lagos State Government has announced a 110-day emergency repair programme on the Oworonshoki/Third Axial Bridge, set to begin on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, and end on Tuesday, September 23, 2025.

The Ministry of Transportation announced on Tuesday, April 29, that the government will repair the road in eight phases. Phases 1–4 (May 6–July 14) will affect the inbound lane to 3rd Mainland Bridge. Phases 5–8 (July 15–September 23) will affect the outbound lane.

To reduce traffic congestion during the period, the state government has rolled out a diversion plan. Traffic officials will divert inbound motorists heading to Oshodi or Victoria Island via Oworonshoki 50 metres before the work zone and return them to the lane 50 metres after.

Alternative routes have also been recommended:

  • Commuters from the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway heading to the Island are advised to take the Ojota Slip Road to Ikorodu Road, then proceed through Anthony to Oshodi.
  • Those coming from Mowe can access the Island via Funsho Williams Avenue and Eko Bridge.
  • Drivers from Ikeja are to connect through Maryland, then continue to Outer Marina via Funsho Williams Avenue.

For outbound traffic (Island to Alapere, Ketu, and Ikorodu), motorists are advised to use Eko Bridge, Funsho Williams Avenue, and Ikorodu Road.

The Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, assured that LASTMA officials will manage traffic and ease movement by positioning themselves at critical points.

According to the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure, the emergency repairs will focus on the bridge’s expansion joints. The partial closure and phased repairs aim to ensure safety and extend the infrastructure’s lifespan.

Motorists have been advised to obey traffic signs and allow extra travel time. The government also appealed for public patience throughout the project’s duration.
