The Lagos State Government has made a startling revelation — residents across the state are spending over ₦13 trillion every month on electricity bills, despite the unreliable nature of power supply.
This was disclosed by the Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Mr. Biodun Ogunleye, during a press conference held at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre in Alausa, Ikeja, ahead of the Lagos Energy Summit scheduled for April 15–18, 2025.
Ogunleye described the situation as both alarming and unsustainable, stating that this huge monthly spend points to a deeper issue in Nigeria’s energy landscape. He emphasized that, despite the massive financial burden, many households and businesses in Lagos still grapple with erratic electricity, power outages, and a growing dependency on costly alternatives like generators and inverters.
“Spending N13 trillion monthly is not just a financial strain — it’s a wake-up call. We cannot continue this way when the energy we pay so much for is not even stable,” he said.
He also stressed the urgency for innovative and sustainable energy solutions, noting that the state government is actively exploring alternative power sources that will ease the burden on residents and improve reliability.
As expectations build ahead of the Lagos Energy Summit, many are hopeful that real solutions will emerge to tackle this long-standing challenge.
