The Lagos State Government has spent N1.5 billion to pay the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) fees for 58,188 students between 2024 and 2025.
The Commissioner for Basic, Primary, and Secondary Education, Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun, announced during the 2025 ministerial briefing at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre, Alausa, Ikeja.
According to him, the payment is part of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s commitment to free education and reducing the financial burden on parents.
He also revealed that 17 new schools—2 primary schools, 10 junior secondary schools, and 5 senior secondary schools—were established in the last year to expand access to quality education across the state.
In addition, 17,575 students were successfully transferred from public and private schools into Junior Secondary School II (JSS2) and Senior Secondary School I (SS1) across Lagos.
For the 2025 WAEC payment, the government carried out biometric capture and image registration for 56,134 SS3 students to ensure transparency and proper verification of those eligible for sponsorship.
