The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has sounded an alarm that bread sold in markets is failing laboratory tests because producers are using saccharine instead of sugar, driven by the high cost of sugar.

Mrs. Roseline Ajayi, NAFDAC’s Southwest Coordinator, highlighted this issue during a stakeholders engagement meeting in Ibadan on Friday. Ajayi emphasized that the use of saccharine and other inappropriate ingredients poses a health risk to consumers. She also warned manufacturers, water producers, and patent medicine dealers against selling fake and substandard products, stressing that NAFDAC will not compromise its standards despite the current economic challenges.

Ajayi further noted that recent operations by the agency revealed that some patent medicine dealers were selling restricted drugs and unregistered products, while some manufacturers failed to adhere to the required packaging and storage standards.
