The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to conduct an immediate and thorough investigation into allegations that its officers received a ₦15 million bribe from Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky. The allegations suggest that Bobrisky may have paid to serve his prison sentence in a private residence instead of a correctional facility.
These claims also include accusations that a bribe was solicited in exchange for a government pardon. In response, Mazi Afam Osigwe (SAN), President of the NBA, released a statement on Wednesday, emphasizing the need for a transparent investigation involving the Attorney General of the Federation and the Office of the National Security Adviser.
The NBA highlighted the importance of upholding the integrity of the legal profession and cautioned the public against rushing to judgment, especially with the involvement of notable figures such as Femi Falana (SAN), a prominent human rights advocate. The NBA stressed that the legal profession must maintain its ethical standards, and any speculation about Falana or others should be avoided until a full inquiry is conducted.
In its statement, the NBA urged the EFCC to determine whether there was any financial inducement related to Bobrisky’s case or if the money laundering charges against him were dropped inappropriately. The association reaffirmed the principle of presumption of innocence but stressed that any public officials found guilty of misconduct must face the law.
The NBA’s call for a swift and impartial investigation aims to ensure accountability and transparency in the matter while preserving the reputation of the legal system.
