A 28-year-old Nigerian woman, Favour Ugwe, has been sentenced to eight years of hard labor in Ghana after being convicted of human trafficking. The sentencing, delivered on Thursday, September 19, by a Ghanaian court, followed her involvement in trafficking a 19-year-old woman from Chad for exploitation in Ghana.
The court also ordered Ugwe to pay GH¢5,000 as compensation to the victim, according to a report by StarrFM. During the trial, Ugwe admitted to recruiting the young victim from Abuja, Nigeria, with the assistance of another Nigerian man, and arranging for her transportation to Ghana.
Her Honour Mrs. Akosua Anokyewaa Adjepong, who presided over the case, emphasized that Ugwe showed no remorse during the trial. The judge also noted the increasing prevalence of human trafficking in Ghana as a factor in the sentencing. However, the court considered Ugwe’s status as a first-time offender, her age, and the months she had already spent in custody when determining the length of the sentence.
In a video shared online, Ugwe was seen crying as security personnel escorted her out of the courthouse following the sentencing.
