A young Nigerian man who was allegedly extorted at gunpoint by police officers attached to the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) in Alagbon, Ikoyi, has recovered ₦2 million, following swift intervention by senior police authorities.
The incident came to light after social media user @YemieFash took to X (formerly Twitter) to raise the alarm, tagging the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin. In the viral post, he claimed that the victim was forced by armed officers to transfer ₦2 million under duress over alleged cryptocurrency trading.
“Officers from the FCID Alagbon in Ikoyi extorted ₦2 million from a young man for allegedly trading cryptocurrency. They held him at gunpoint and ordered him to transfer the funds to an account they provided,”the tweet read. “He was given no documentation or formal charge and can identify the officers involved.”
@YemieFash’s public appeal for justice drew attention from top police officials, prompting a quick investigation into the matter.
In an update shared days later, he confirmed the successful recovery of the funds:
“The ₦2 million has been fully refunded, along with ₦40,000 deducted as POS charges, totaling ₦2,040,000. Many thanks to AIG Margaret Ochalla of FCID Alagbon and PRO @mayegunAmina for their rapid response. Also, commendation to @PoliceNG\_CRU for stepping in swiftly.”
He further revealed that the officers involved had been taken into custody and would face disciplinary actions in accordance with police regulations.
The case has sparked widespread conversation online, with Nigerians applauding the victim’s courage to speak out and the authorities’ response, while also renewing calls for police reform and accountability.
Many social media users expressed relief at the outcome but emphasized the need for systemic changes to prevent such abuses from recurring.
As of press time, the Nigeria Police Force has not released an official statement detailing the disciplinary process or the identities of the officers involved.
